About Sarah: Trauma-Informed Birth and Family Support
I have a Bachelor’s degree in Family Studies: Family Services from BYU, with a capstone in Family Life Education. That means I’m trained to educate and support families using evidence-based, accessible tools — especially in times of transition, like trauma, anxiety, postpartum recovery, and identity shifts.
I’m also trained to teach multiple evidence-based parenting and relationship programs, including PREP, Love Notes, and Anxiously Engaged. As a volunteer educator with organizations like Strengthening Families, Welcome Baby Utah, and GRANDfamilies, I’ve helped parents navigate challenges like postpartum mental health, secure attachment, and kinship care (familial foster placements).
(Can you tell I’m a bit of a nerd?)
Why I Do This Work: Birth After Trauma
My decision to turn my passion for birth into something more began after I became pregnant again following a traumatic birth experience.
My first birth was joyful — I completely fell in love with birth and birth research — but it was also complicated and scary. I found myself juggling birth trauma while caring for a newborn… and feeling confused, because I really did love birth.
Being pregnant again was... rough. I was overwhelmed by a mix of joy, fear, pride, and panic. I desperately needed support, but struggled to find resources for people navigating pregnancy after birth trauma. That lived experience fuels my passion for trauma-informed, nuanced, and family-centered care.
I have spent the last four years completely obsessed with birth, and I value educating myself as much as I value educating my parents! I am so excited to finally (2025!) use my research and knowledge to serve families.
